Bastille Day Celebrations: Read on for Frenchie Goodness

Bastille Day Celebrations: Read on for Frenchie Goodness

Bonjour à tous!

Bienvenue to my post about Bastille Day!

Bastille Day is actually the English name for the French National Day (la Fête nationale or le 14 juillet), celebrated on the 14th of July. It commemorates the first day of the Storming of the Bastille in 1789, which was a turning point in the French Revolution. It also observes the occasion of the Fête de la Fédération on the same day in 1790. The day is very special for French people, and it is celebrated with military parades, fireworks, concerts and balls.

It is also celebrated internationally, both by the French abroad and by lovers of the French culture, language and history. I certainly fit into the second category here, and along with my Grandmother we set out to have a day full of French fun to celebrate this fantastic day!

Le Carpe Diem

We headed into the city to Le Carpe Diem, a quintessentially French café that sells crepes, pastries, tea, coffee and various other bits and pieces of deliciousness. I have indeed written about this place before, and that would be because it is genuinely one of my favourite cafés in Adelaide.

The whole café was decorated especially for Bastille Day, complete with Eiffel Towers on each table and the colours of the French flag all around. The crepes were delicious as per usual. I ordered what I always got: the Jasmine, and my Grandmother got a special Bastille day crepe adorned with fresh strawberries, cherries and raspberries. I got to speak a bit of French here too – it was the perfect start to our day!

Bourjois Bastille Day Box

I was lucky enough to receive a Bastille Day Box from Bourjois as part of the Bastille Day celebrations! I received a beautiful blusher in the shade Rose D’Or (Golden Rose). It is such a lovely bright shade, and it smells just like a rose which is a pleasant experience to have when putting on your makeup! It also came with the Push Up Volume Glamour Black Serum mascara, and Rouge Edition Velvet Matte Finish Lip colour in Red-volution. I used all three of these when I went out last night and there’s a picture of how it looked above! I am so so pleased with how the mascara made my eyes look and the deep shade of the lip colour.

The Central Markets

My Grandmother read in the paper that there would be celebrations for Bastille Day at the Central Markets, so that was our next port of call. We arrived there in the late morning and it was already fairly busy with people. Little French flags were dotted all around throughout the market stalls, and there was a cute little cheese tasting booth where we got to try some delicious morsels.

The big cake you can see above was also sitting on a table (with a guard! – I found it so funny that some poor security guy had to actually guard the cake in case someone tried to eat some!). I must admit, though, the cake did look pretty tasty with its mini macaroons and gingerbread Eiffel Tower. There was a little crepe stand too making yummy foods for people to enjoy, but we were already pretty full from our previous adventure!

Seasonal at Hahndorf

After we finished up in the city, we headed to Blackwood to look at some cute French-style homeware and jewellery stores. Once we had done this, we headed out to Hahndorf (notably not very French, but still a beautiful European-style town within our lovely state) and had lunch at Seasonal.

It was my first time at this café and I was amazed at how delicious the food was. It is all made (as you can probably guess) entirely seasonally, which means everything is totally fresh and it just tastes so good. The little chippies were so moorish as well – we were definitely full by the time we finished up here!

All in all, I had a lovely day on Bastille Day and I think it is a fantastic celebration! I hope everyone else enjoyed it too. Maybe I’ll even be in France next year to celebrate! Who knows?!

Fashion First at the Hotel Richmond: Skinny Fools + Dangerfield

Fashion First at the Hotel Richmond: Skinny Fools + Dangerfield

Bonjour à tous!

Last night I attended an amazing fashion show held at the Hotel Richmond on Rundle Mall in Adelaide. It was an incredibly entertaining event and I absolutely adored all of the pieces I saw. When I first arrived at the event I managed to procure myself a spot in the front row – I didn’t want to miss anything. Two brands showcased their latest looks: Skinny Fools and Dangerfield.

Makeup was done by Inglot Cosmetics and hair by Blow! It’s a Hair thing. And of course, models were provided by Kalou Models (previously FTM Model Management) – one of whom was my beautiful sister Amy Castle! I may be a little biased, but in my opinion she did an absolutely amazing job and she has a fantastic career ahead of her.

Skinny Fools

Skinny Fools is a label run by the incredibly talented Shayne Brook Simpson. I was so excited to see her pieces come out as I have seen a bit of her work before and I love the style. True to form, the pieces were flowy and ethereal but yet also edgy and modern. The addition of the fluffy handbags to go with each outfit was incredibly cute and brought the pieces all together really well.

Dangerfield

I have always loved the Dangerfield label. It has such a different and cool vibe. Deeply coloured patterns adorn 50’s style swirling skirts, and knitted cardigans exist in bright reds and dark greens. I also thought that the men’s range was really awesome, especially the tops with cute lil cherries or chillis printed on them!

Super blurry – I’m so sorry lovelies! How gorgeous are the designs though?!

What I wore:

I wore my stunning embroidered velvet Poppy Apparel dress, my Novo boots and my deliciously warm cream Bardot coat. Don’t forget that you can get 10% off at the Poppy Apparel shop using the code “chloesvoyage”. I wrote a whole article on my gorgeous dress here.

Before the first fashion designs came out, we were welcomed by our cheerful host Nick, and he proceeded to interview South Australian Miss World Contestant Aishah Stocker. She was raising money on behalf of the Variety Children’s Charity. After the stunning Skinny Fools designs came out, hip hop dancers called Code Magenta who are competing in a championship danced on the runway. It was fantastic and a joy to watch.

I just can’t express enough how much fun this event was, and I will definitely be attending the next one!
